Effective Communication

NHS must move with the times

In a recent speech the Health and Social Care Secretary, Matt Hancock, pushed for the NHS to make a move towards digital communications. He advocated for the use of email, stating that 'having to deal with outdated technology is hugely frustrating for staff and patients alike – and in many cases downright dangerous'. He gave the example of a letter being lost in the post and stated that was the 'difference between life and death'.

Mr Hancock added 'There is no reason why a doctor cannot email a patient confidentially, for example with their test results or prescription, rather than make them wait days for a letter or ask them to come into the surgery. The rest of the world runs on email – and the NHS should too'.

Fax Machine Ban

While fax machines are seen as antiques in most industries they have continued to be commonplace in the NHS. However in December 2018, Matt Hancock announced a ban on fax machines, and as a result, trusts are no longer able to purchase them. From April, NHS organisations will be required to use modern communication methods, such as secure email. This will lead to improvements in patient safety and cybersecurity.

Improved Communication

Digital filing is one of the ways improvements in communication are made. It leads to easier, more effective and improved collaboration. In essence, documents can be instantly shared with everyone in the organisation.  This is essential for faster communication and a greater degree of transparency. It also means that hard copies aren't in circulation and you save money not having to make copies.
